How Sevilla FC play

System, playing identity, and what sets the team apart at both ends of the pitch.

Playing identity
Preferred system
4-1-4-1
Philosophy
Compact, disciplined block, priority given to solidity and to making use of the academy youngsters, with in-game changes of shape openly embraced by García Plaza.
Attacking strengths
6 goals scored in 3 matchdays (5th in LaLiga with 6 points), with a genuine volume of shots — 20 attempts against Atlético on 29/08 according to García Plaza — but a finishing dependent on Isaac Romero, Ejuke and the youngsters (Miguel Sierra on the scoresheet against Atlético).
Defensive solidity
5 goals conceded in 3 matches, including 3 in a first half against Atlético that the head coach himself described as overrun; a centre-back pairing reshuffled after the departures and weakened by the absence of Alfon and the Marcão situation.
Pressing
Organised pressing but of variable height: García Plaza acknowledged after the match against Atlético (29/08) that the team had been better structured in its pressing after the hydration break, which markedly improved the second half.
Transitions
Not reliably documented by the sources consulted as of this date.
StrengthTwo wins from the first three matchdays including a victory at San Mamés, the confirmed emergence of the canteranos (Miguel Sierra, Nico Guillén, Manu Bueno) and a healthier transfer window balance (positive net investment of around +€18m according to Betfair).
WeaknessLack of squad depth publicly acknowledged by the head coach, a left-back position to rebuild after the sale of Oso, and an inability to keep pace against a big side (1-3 against Atlético).

The mood around the club, and who is missing

Internal climate, relationship with the supporters, and known absences before the next match.

Mood
Squad confidence
Mixed and under scrutiny. The six points taken in the first two matchdays were followed by a 1-3 hiding against Atlético at the Sánchez-Pizjuán, and the week began with three players — Isaac Romero, Lucien Agoumé and Robbie Ure — missing the first session with minor discomfort. Sporting director José Ignacio Navarro tried to reassure by claiming a “positive” window and a squad rejuvenated by close to four years. Luis García Plaza, for his part, opened the restart with a long team talk, a sign that he is trying to refocus a heavily rebuilt group. The trip to Monchi's Espanyol adds symbolic weight to an already tense fixture.
Coach / players / board relationship
Real tension but defused in public this week. After the rift opened by the sale of Joaquín “Oso” Martínez to Strasbourg, on 2 September José Ignacio Navarro acknowledged that Luis García Plaza's frustration was “entirely understandable”, while defending the deal on the grounds of the player's remaining contract. The sporting director claimed a discreet, executive role — “the glamour is for the players to carry” — and said he had “used every resource” available. The late arrivals of Fofana, Stassin and Correia are presented by the club as the answer to the bench's requests. The gap between the institutional message and the concern the head coach has expressed nonetheless remains the season's running thread.
Mood with the supporters
The sevillismo has turned out despite the crisis: 37,428 season-ticket holders have confirmed their seats at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, a 96.7% renewal rate, a remarkable figure given the club's financial position. The mistrust is directed at the executives rather than the head coach, with the local press relaying the fear that “the same managers who ruined the club's finances” could undermine the man providing stability. The floral offering to the Virgen de los Reyes on 2 September brought together the squad, president José María del Nido Carrasco and the head coach, with a tribute paid to Antonio Puerta and José Antonio Reyes. The trip to the RCDE Stadium, shown free to air, will be closely watched.
Pressure on the head coach
Paradoxically limited. The local press considers that Luis García Plaza is dealing with a situation he did not create and is simply managing it, which Navarro's press conference of 2 September implicitly confirmed by validating his frustration. The coach therefore retains credit, all the more so as his team had taken six points in the first two matchdays. He will nonetheless have to work with a dressing room half of which has changed and a schedule that sends him to face Monchi's Espanyol and then keep going. His press conference was scheduled for Friday at 11:30, after a session at the Sánchez-Pizjuán the day before.
Club objectives
Staying up without alarm while the finances are repaired remains the realistic horizon, no higher ambition having been stated officially. The sporting directors embraced a strategy of rejuvenation: eleven arrivals, ten departures, seven expiring contracts and more than €40m generated by sales, in a stated logic of “economic and sporting sustainability”. The club offset its inability to buy with loans, with Fofana, Stassin and Correia arriving in the final hours. September's priority is to settle a team half of whose starters were not there in June.
Recent internal tensions
The gap between the head coach's requests, who wanted a centre-forward and a playmaker, and a board constrained by the lowest salary cap in the league remains the fault line. Navarro sought to close it publicly on 2 September by validating García Plaza's frustration and detailing the resource constraints. Some confusion persists over the squad's actual size: the figure of 17 professionals put forward on 1 September by El Gol Digital is not confirmed by the counts published after the last signings were registered. Finally, the ongoing termination of Fabio Cardoso's contract, absent from training, lengthens the list of moves further.
Absences
InjuredAlfon González — Muscle tear sustained in August, unavailable.
InjuredPatrik Mercado — Injured, his absence leaves the playmaker's role vacant with no replacement having been signed.

What the press says
  • Real Madrid - Sevilla FC: Contra la historia, las bajas y todos los gatos de MourinhoIt has been crossing the door of Santiago Bernabéu, a land that has been closed to the Sevillist interests for almost two decades. If one more wall was missing, the company is turning this time into a kind of triple mortal jump for the whole of Nervion, which at the unbearable slap of history now adds some weight loss in its ranks in the midst of the deafened white storm against the arbitral stage, the committees and LaLiga agitated by its greatest dialectic arete, José Mourinho. The test cannot be more cumbersome for a Sevilla that accumulates 19 official commitments without tasting the victory in Chamartin. Despite the overwhelming weight of the statistics and the terrible atmosphere that awaits Luis García Plaza in the capital tonight, the team clings to its arguments to support the faith. The party has to play it and this Seville has nothing to do with the last courses of zozobra and weapons delivered in advance. The tenderness and competitive solvency displayed by those of Nervión in their most demanding quotes to date, such as the one that has been released without going further in a splendid first part to the unbeatable leader, FC Barcelona, open up a grudge to optimism. In addition to this, the tidal of doubts that surrounds the Mourinho picture in its football one week from the Classic, a circumstance of which the white red dress is intended to take out a cut by appealing to the collective conviction and the character of a group that, as it has shown in the eight days disputed so far, refuses to surrender before time. However, the balance in the Bernabéu portrays a journey through the desert for the Sevillists that has continued since December 2008. After that 3-4 that led to the removal of German coach Bernd Schuster, the harvest of the Spanish in feudo merengue is summed up in a tearing 18-stroke bag and a single tie, in the course 2020-2021, during the Pandemic parenthesis in Valdebebas, when the troops of Julen Lopez-tegui caressed the feeza after taking advantage on two occasions thanks to the dianas of Fernando and Rakitic, finally neutralized by the riddles of Asensio and Hazard (2-2). If Madrid reaches the party with the trenches, it is also not that it is at its sweetest time with the arbitral collective. It still collides for Nervion the drip of Cordero Vega's decisions in the Ciutat of Valencia before the Levant that irritated the nervians, like the eight seconds pitied to Vlachosmos, punished with a corner against, the yellow sperm to Castrin or the injury of Miguel Sierra in which the collegiate did not even point out any lack. The glass of the Sevillist patience was spilled with the second yellow and Isaac's expulsion for celebrating his goal by sending the public to silence, rule at all disused, and the application of an eight-minute discount that lasted up to almost a quarter of an hour, added 'diabolical' in which Seville received up to two goals. "We took 70 minutes off in eight games. Every time we win, there are eight or ten minutes," he said in the press conference before the clash with Madrid, the Sevillist technician, Luis García Plaza. But the complaints of Seville are diluted in the white tsunami against the arbitrators, committees and the League itself. In the absence of football in the meringue picture, Mourinho is more Mourinho than ever and takes out all the artillery to prepare the ground and intimidate as far as they leave. In the Bernabéu, he felt as a shot the punishment of 4 games to Vinicius for his hair grip to Saliba and later protests. But what blew up the madridists was the time to communicate the punishment by Disciplina, just in the moments before the transcendent duel of Champions del Real Madrid before the AS Rome. Mourinho pulled the popular Portuguese saying 'hidden cat with a rabo de fora' (hidden cat with a slit tail) to turn all the arbitral gears of Spain upside down. "Did they have to do it when we were on our way to the stadium? It seems to me that the cat is no longer hidden. The cat goes for free, things are done without shame. He's going for free. Two hours before a game, a player from a Spanish team who has made three points for the prestige of Spanish football, does not seem normal. But it seems normal to me, because the cat is no longer hidden," the technician sentenced the committees very hard. At yesterday's press conference, he ironically added that "over the four parties, I am happy because I thought they would punish him more. I thought the hidden cats were gonna put a game in it or two more." He also took advantage of the white coach to "hold" Javier Tebas. Madrid asked for his resignation in a hard and extensive communication following statements by the President of LaLiga in which he compared the communication of the meringue club with that of Goebbels, leader of Nazi propaganda. "He only apologizes if his is a clinical case. If not, there is no justification or apology," said the coach born in Setúbal. A Mourinho who, as an extra spicy to the party, still does not forget one of the most frustrating chapters of his career, with the Sevilla FC in the middle. He still has his voracious criticism of the referee Anthony Taylor at the Final of the European League of 2023 in Budapest that Rome ended up losing to the Hispanians: "The referee seemed Spanish. We're going home dead for an injustice." As for the ounces, the Sevilla FC has the fall of the sanctioned Isaac Romero and loses for injury to Guridi and the very title Miguel Sierra, who will be out of combat several months after his shoulder injury. Alfon, Ejuke and Vargas are the alternatives of García Plaza for the granadino. Kochorashvili, for his part, has not been able to work normally during the week due to physical problems. If you don't get to the game, Peque, Manu Bueno and Nico Guillén emerge as the only options to replace the Georgian in the medular. Also considering that Stassin is not yet in the process of beginning, the Sevillist alignment would be that formed by Vlachodos; Churches, Castrin, Kike Salas, Suazo; Agoumé, Fofana, Kochorashvili; Alfon, Félix Correia and Robbie Ure. Real Madrid Courtois; Trent, Konaté, Huijsen, Cucurella; Arda Güler, Tchouameni; Valverde, Bellingham, Diomande; and Mbappé. Sevilla FC Vlachodos; Iglesias, Castrin, Kike Salas, Suazo; Agoumé, Fofana, Peque; Alfon, Félix Correia and Robbie Ure. Mateo Busquets Ferrer (Balear Committee). Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. • Alineaciones probables del Real Madrid - Sevilla de LaLiga EA Sports 2026-2027: onces y banquillo de suplentesWith two unwon games behind his back, and with a stop through, he faces the Sevilla FC this Sunday a test of remarkable demand. And it is, on the occasion of the 9th day of LaLiga, those of Nervion visit Santiago Bernabéu to measure, from 2100 hours, a Real Madrid that will beat them in four points. Despite the bitter tie of last Monday to the Levant (3-3), the Sevilla continues to maintain its undefeated status at home in what we have been carrying for the season (1-3 to the Athletic, 1-1 to the Espanyol and 0-1 to the Sports, in addition to the aforementioned tie in the Ciutat of Valencia). For its part, Madrid has full wins as a local, having joined five wins in the five games that it has played in the Bernabéu (4-1 to the Real Society, 4-0 to the Málaga, 2-1 to the Inter in Champions, 4-1 to the Vallecano Ray and 1-0 to the Villarreal). Possible alignment of the Seville to the Real MadridEn less than a week the list of casualties has grown considerably in the Seville. And that is that Luis García Plaza will not be able to count on up to five players from the first team to measure to Madrid; it is Marcao, Miguel Sierra, Kochorashvili and Guridi, injured, and Isaac, punished by the red one who saw the last day. The novelty in the call for the party to the Levant is that the coach recovers Lucas Stassin; they also stand out in the expedition that has traveled to the capital Fabio Cardoso and the Canterans Nico Guillén, Jesús Cruz and Rafa Romero. "The difficulty of the party is high, not even the best teams in Seville, winners of Europe League have achieved a good result. I'm going to repeat that. We intend to compete and see if we can score," said the press conference technician. Proper alignment of the Sevilla FC: Vlachodos; Churches, Castrin, Kike Salas, Suazo; Agoumé, Fofana, Peque; Alfon, Félix Correia and Robbie Ure. Beyond the casualties of the Sevillist wardrobe, García Plaza could only make a change in the eleven in respect of the one he took out last Monday in the Ciutat of Valencia; the prepper would choose to give the right-wing title to Alfon, to the detriment of the injured Miguel Sierra, and to Peque in the center of the camp, supplying Kochorashvili. Real Madrid's possible alignment to the Seville also comes with several casualties the Madrid to this shock, some of weight like Vinicius, which will fulfill before the Seville the first party of punishment of the four who have fallen to it; neither will the injured Asencio and Rodrygo be available to José Mourinho. The good news for the Portuguese technician is that Huijsen is recovered after punishment. Mendy and Militao have started to train with the group, although in the end only the Brazilian power plant has entered the call. "The team is tired, but tomorrow it won't be. Tomorrow's another day and we'll be fine. We also have very good options in case we want to make some change and bring freshness to the team," the Portuguese prepper warned at a press conference regarding the status of its players. Probable alignment of Real Madrid CF: Courtois; Trent, Konaté, Huijsen, Cucurella; Arda Güler, Tchouameni; Valverde, Bellingham, Diomande; and Mbappé. As Mourinho himself said, some changes are expected in the 11 Madridist with regard to the Champions party last Wednesday before Rome. Players such as Trent, Huijsen and Arda Güler could start from the beginning before Seville.ABC Deportes · 18 Oct 2026 · machine-translated

In-house calculation, from this page's standings data alone: 8 matches played by Real Madrid, 8 matches by Sevilla FC. Confidence: fair
The formula, in plain words — with this match's figures
  1. League average. 238 goals scored over 159 team-matches played (19 teams taken into account), i.e. μ = 1.50 goal scored per team per match. This is the reference point: everything that follows is expressed relative to it.
  2. Attacking and defensive strengths. Goals scored (or conceded) per match, divided by μ. 1.00 = exactly average; in defence, above 1.00 means “concedes more than average”.
    TeamGoalsRawKept
    Real Madrid — attack19 in 8 matches1.591.34
    Real Madrid — defence8 in 8 matches0.670.81
    Sevilla FC — attack13 in 8 matches1.091.05
    Sevilla FC — defence12 in 8 matches1.001.00
The “Kept” column is the result of shrinkage towards the mean: weight = P / (P + 6), i.e. 0.57 for Real Madrid and 0.57 for Sevilla FC. The rest of the weight goes to the league average. This is what stops a lone 5-0 from producing an attack at 3.3 times the average — and hence a 95% probability.
  3. Home advantage (γ). Measured on the league itself: 1.76 goal scored on average by the host against 1.38 by the visitor, over the 45 fixtures present in each team's last 5 matches. Raw ratio 1.27; shrunk towards 1 (weight 0.43, on the log of the ratio) then capped at 1.25 → γ = 1.11. Shrinkage goes towards 1, i.e. no advantage at all: while the sample is small, the model does not assert a home advantage it cannot measure.
  4. Venue correction, specific to each team. Drawn from the home/away split: points per match at the venue concerned are compared to points per match over all fixtures, with stronger shrinkage (weight = P / (P + 8)) and a bound of ±12%.
    Real Madrid at home: 3.00 pts/match versus 2.25 overall over 4 matches → ×1.111
    Sevilla FC away: 2.00 pts/match versus 1.75 overall over 4 matches → ×1.048
  5. Expected goals. One side's attack is set against the other's defence. γ applies to the host only: applying it the other way round too would count the home advantage twice.
    λReal Madrid = 1.50 × 1.34 × 1.00 × 1.11 × 1.111 = 2.46
    λSevilla FC = 1.50 × 1.05 × 0.81 × 1.048 = 1.33
  6. Poisson grid. Probability of every exact score from 0-0 to 8-8, assuming the two goal totals are independent, then adding up the cells: home win 62.2%, draw 18.4%, away win 19.4% — displayed rounded to whole numbers so that they add up to exactly 100. Most likely exact score in the grid: 2-1 (only 9.1%, which says enough about how unpredictable an exact score is).
Limits of this model — they are not anecdotal.
  • It only knows goals and a venue. Neither absences, suspensions, line-ups, fatigue, stakes, weather nor club context enter the calculation — while the other tabs of this page show that they matter.
  • The assumption that the two goal totals are independent is false in reality: it slightly underestimates tight scores, hence the draw.
  • γ is measured over a rolling window (each team's last 5 matches), not over the whole season.
  • The shrinkage constants (6, 60, 8) and the bounds are choices, not measurements. They were tuned to be cautious early in the season; they were not calibrated on a results history, as none is available here.
  • No after-the-fact evaluation has been made: at this stage, nobody knows whether this model is better or worse calibrated than another.

Sporting director José Ignacio Navarro presented a “positive” assessment of the window: eleven arrivals, ten departures and seven expiring contracts, more than €40m generated by sales and a squad rejuvenated by close to four years. He justified the method: “We did not want to sign for the sake of signing, the resources are what they are and they had to be used well.”

Navarro also defused the conflict with his head coach by calling Luis García Plaza's frustration after Joaquín “Oso” Martínez's move to Strasbourg “entirely understandable”, while pointing out that the player, ten months from the end of his contract, had been “very honest”. He claimed his own role in the background: “The glamour is for the players to carry, they are the ones people come to the stadium for.”

Beware a widely repeated figure: on 1 September El Gol Digital reported a squad reduced to 17 professionals. The counts published after the deadline by the Seville press in fact number around twenty players, the late arrivals of Youssouf Fofana, on loan from AC Milan, Lucas Stassin, on loan from Saint-Étienne with a purchase option, and Félix Correia, on loan from Lille, having been added afterwards. The contradiction is not resolved by the sources.
